Well, there are no other polls so I'm not sure if this is right, feel free to fix it if not.

The poll is pretty self-explanatory, at what age did you realize you were atheist? I say 'realize' because I think that either a) people never believe in the first place and just take a while to realize that, or b) it is a position you come to after thinking and considering what you currently believe.

Obviously the poll won't be indicative of the 'general atheist population' but it'll be interesting to see for the members of this site.

I was somewhere in my late 20s when I finally admitted to myself that I had no faith in anything supernatural. That was after years of study and thought. But even long before that I'd stopped acting as though I believed, didn't go to church or celebrate religious holidays, and partied like I couldn't get enough of it.

Some say God is living there [in space]. I was looking around very attentively, but I did not see anyone there. I did not detect either angels or gods....I don't believe in God. I believe in man - his strength, his possibilities, his reason.

I was very young, younger than I can hope to pinpoint with a satisfying degree of accuracy, when I became one. I simply thought one night, that the prayers that were said to be answered, were not being answered, and that God was a lie. Then I went about with life thinking little else of religion, not even being aware of the word "atheist" for many more years, when I would actually do much thinking about my position. It was probably in my late teens that I realized I'm an atheist.

I started going to Sunday School when I was four. It was getting close to Christmas and the teacher was telling us about the birth of Jesus and mentioned the angel that told Mary she was pregnant. I asked for more details and just could not accept what she was telling me: Guys flitting between heaven and earth with bloody great wings on their back! What a load of crap.

And somewhere during my questioning, the teacher said that angels could be seen in the old days, but not anymore, because they no longer come down to earth like they did back then. Even at age four, I realised that was a cop-out and so I became an atheist at age four - even before I had heard the word "atheist".

There is a certain practice that young males become aware of around the time of puberty.  I'm referring to something that is usually done alone, perhaps in a bedroom or bathroom.

I was a freshman in a Catholic high school when I first, um, did this certain thing.  When the Church told me I would burn in hell for all eternity for committing this horrible crime and making the Baby Jesus cry I realized they were trying to sink a hook into my very nature in order to manipulate and control my every thought.  This turned on the lamp of critical analysis and I soon realized it was all made up bullshit for the purpose of social control.

Besides, it's worth it to burn in hell if the creepy priests that taught in that horrible school are not going to be there.

Catholicism cured me of theism.
