What is it with these people and sex? And hair?
QuoteAt the time of the invasion of England by William the Conqueror, the Normans wore their hair very short. Harold, in his progress towards Hastings, sent forward spies to view the strength and number of the enemy. They reported, amongst other things, on their return, that "the host did almost seem to be priests, because they had all their face and both their lips shaven." The fashion among the English at the time was to wear the hair long upon the head and the upper lip, but to shave the chin. When the haughty victors had divided the broad lands of the Saxon thanes and franklins among them, when tyranny of every kind was employed to make the English feel that they were indeed a subdued and broken nation, the latter encouraged the growth of their hair, that they might resemble as little as possible their cropped and shaven masters.

This fashion was exceedingly displeasing to the clergy, and prevailed to a considerable extent in France and Germany. Towards the end of the eleventh century, it was decreed by the Pope, and zealously supported by the ecclesiastical authorities all over Europe, that such persons as wore long hair should be excommunicated while living, and not be prayed for when dead. William of Malmesbury relates, that the famous St. Wulstan, Bishop of Worcester, was peculiarly indignant whenever he saw a man with long hair. He declaimed against the practice as one highly immoral, criminal, and beastly. He continually carried a small knife in his pocket, and whenever anybody, offending in this respect, knelt before him to receive his blessing, he would whip it out slily, and cut off a handful, and then, throwing it in his face, tell him to cut off all the rest, or he would go to hell.

A COMMUNICATION

QuoteOn the lawfulness of holding slaves, considering it in a moral and religious view, the Convention think it their duty to exhibit their sentiments, on the present occasion, before your Excellency, because they consider their duty to God, the peace of the State, the satisfaction of scrupulous consciences, and the welfare of the slaves themselves, as intimately connected with a right view of the subject. The rather, because certain writers on politics, morals and religion, and some of them highly respectable, have advanced positions, and inculcated sentiments, very unfriendly to the principle and practice of holding slaves; and by some these sentiments have been advanced among us, tending in their nature, directly to disturb the domestic peace of the State, to produce insubordination and rebellion among the slaves, and to infringe the rights of our citizens; and indirectly, to deprive the slaves of religious privileges, by awakening in the minds of their masters a fear, that acquaintance with the Scriptures, and the enjoyment of these privileges would naturally produce the aforementioned effects; because the sentiments in opposition to the holding of slaves have been attributed, by their advocates, to the Holy Scriptures, and to the genius of Christianity. These sentiments, the Convention, on whose behalf I address your Excellency, cannot think just, or well-founded: for the right of holding slaves is clearly established by the Holy Scriptures, both by precept and example. In the Old Testament, the Isrealites were directed to purchase their bond-men and bond-maids of the Heathen nations; except they were of the Canaanites, for these were to be destroyed. And it is declared, that the persons purchased were to be their "bond-men forever;" and an "inheritance for them and their children." They were not to go out free in the year of jubilee, as the Hebrews, who had been purchased, were: the line being clearly drawn between them.*[See Leviticus XXV. 44, 45, 46, &c.] In example, they are presented to our view as existing in the families of the Hebrews as servants, or slaves, born in the house, or bought with money: so that the children born of slaves are here considered slaves as well as their parents. And to this well known state of things, as to its reason and order, as well as to special privileges, St. Paul appears to refer, when he says, "But I was free born."

QuoteAndrea Yates, Houston Texas, 2001. Drowned her 5 children. The reason she gave was that her children weren't righteous and were doomed to Hell.
Dena Schlosser, Plano Texas, 2004. Amputated her baby's arms with a knife and offered her to God, as she believed God had commanded her to do.
Blaine Milam & Jessica Carson, Rusk County Texas, 2008. Told police Carson's 13 month old daughter was possessed and they tried to exorcize the demons out of her by beating her with a hammer and biting her. It may have been successful, as the autopsy did not reveal any demons.
Jan David Clark, Odessa Texas, 2008. Said he was holding his 59 year-old wife face-down on the floor during an exorcism when the devil entered his body and caused her to die.
Otty Sanchez, San Antonio Texas, 2009. Said the devil made her kill and mutilate her 3 ½ week old son. She reportedly decapitated the baby, ate part of his brain, and chewed 3 of his toes off.
March 2008, Weston Wisconsin. Leilani Neumann's daughter was sick. She and her family prayed and prayed for the girl to get better, but she didn't. They thought their God was testing their faith. They didn't want to show their lack of faith by going to a doctor. So the child died of untreated diabetes on Easter Sunday, 2008. According to a police chief who spoke with Leilani Neumann, the mother believed that her daughter could be resurrected.
April 5, 2009. Marie Moore and her son, Mitchell, were shooting targets at a gun range when without any warning she shot her son in the head and then turned the gun on herself. She said in tapes and notes left before the murder/suicide that God made her the Antichrist, and that she must die to save her boyfriend, son and the world from violence, and her mother, father and brother from hell. Among the things she said was "Hopefully when I die, there will 1,000 years of peace."
February 2009. LaGrange, Missouri. Christopher Piersee murdered his 21 year old wife and 5 month old son then painted crosses on them with their own blood. Later, he told deputies he was the archangel Michael and he had killed Lucifer (his wife) and the Antichrist (his son) with a knife because bullets wouldn't work. He also painted "Michael" and "Lucifer" on the wall with blood.
Clackamas County, Oregon, March 2, 2008. As 15-month-old Ava Worthington struggled to breathe, church members anointed her with oil and pleaded with God to provide a cure. But Ava died March 2, 2008, of bronchial pneumonia and a blood infection. Antibiotics could have saved her life, the state medical examiner's office said. Four months after Ava died, her 16-year-old uncle, Neil Beagley, died from heart failure due to complications from a urinary tract blockage. Beagley's death could have been easily prevented by a urologist placing a catheter to remove the blockage. He was instead taken to his grandmother's where members of the family's church attempted to cure him through "faith healing."

"Some say God is living there [in space]. I was looking around very attentively, but I did not see anyone there. I did not detect either angels or gods....I don't believe in God. I believe in man - his strength, his possibilities, his reason."
